Mural Mosaic Launches at the Olympics ... before coming Home to Galiano
A collaborative 231 painting mural created by almost 200 west coast artists has been unveiled at the 2010 Winter Olympics - Spirit Square in West Vancouver on Saturday, February 13.
Displayed from February 13th - February 28, 2010 Hours for Viewing: 10AM - 5PM Monday - Thursday/Sunday; 10 AM - 9PM Friday & Saturday
For the last year and a half, over 200 of Canada's finest artists from along the west coast have collaborated to create a stunning 12 foot x 21 foot mural. The mural is comprised of 231, 12 inch x 12 inch ORIGINAL paintings that, together, bring a united image to life. There are no digital effects and the artists did not know each other or know what the united final image would be.
A mystery to be unveiled during the Olympics, before it is moved to its permanent home at The Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa on Galiano Island.
The Mural was initiated by the people of Galiano Island and designed and orchestrated by artists Lewis Lavoie, Phil Alain and Paul Lavoie of Mural Mosaic. “Kunamokst”- Coastal Inspirations Mural Mosaic combines artists as young as 16 years old to artists over 90 years old. There are artists from various regions along the coast, internationally renowned artists, French Canadian artists, Galiano artists like Kenna Fair, Keith Holmes, Larry Foden and more; First Nations artists like critically acclaimed Roy Henry Vickers and April White, and iconic Canadian artist Robert Bateman.
Many of the 200 artists have been featured on the world stage as well. Special guest artists include California world renowned whale muralist Wyland and California muralist Judy Baca. The title KUNAMOKST- is Chinook Jargon meaning “together”.
