Kunamokst Mural Mosaic on Galiano Island!
The Kunamokst Mural has been unveiled in the entrance of the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa, and will continue its show throughout this year and beyond, highlighting the art of the West Coast.Designed and orchestrated by the artists of Mural Mosaic: Lewis Lavoie, Phil Alain and Paul Lavoie. “Kunamokst”- Coastal Inspirations Mural Mosaic combines artists as young as 16 years old to artists over 90 years old.
There are artists from various regions along the coast: internationally renowned artists, French Canadian artists, Galiano artists like Tish Saunders, Kenna Fair, Penny Prior, Annette Shaw; First Nations artists like critically acclaimed Roy Henry Vickers and April White, and iconic Canadian artist Robert Bateman. Many of the 200 artists have been featured on the world stage as well. Special guest artists include California world renowned whale muralist Wyland and California muralist Judy Baca.
For the last year and a half, almost 200 of these artists, some of Canada's finest, have collaborated to create a stunning 12 foot x 21 foot mural. The mural is comprised of 231 ORIGINAL paintings (each 12” x 12” square) that combine to bring to life a new, united image. There are no digital effects, and the artists did not know each other nor did they know what the final image would be. The artists were given a 12” x 12” panel, and were instructed to paint their interpretation of West Coast life, be it sea life, or seafaring life, with the only guideline being to follow the general colour palette and tone of the panel they were given. None had any idea of the larger painting they were creating, until the unveiling....
Kunamokst, Chinook jargon for "Together" represents the best of West Coast artists within the magic of Mural Mosaic.

Upcoming Events on Galiano Island
‘SACRED GEOMETRY’, New Paintings by Tish Saunders, July 31 - August 28
Painting a mandala is a beautiful experience. Tish Saunders describes it as: "I start by making intuitive decisions regarding the imagery and colour that I will use. The repetition of the shapes and symbols causes new patterns to emerge. Combinations of strokes of colours on other colours cause energy to begin to move and this is read by the eye and the mind with exciting results.... there is no room for indecision or re-working. The strokes of colour are decisive....
"The process is clean and pure and the results sing to me, as they have been laid down with a one-pointed mind and clear intent".
‘WOOD, WATER, STONE AND BONE’, Recent Work by Bruce Dolsen, Sept 4 - 25
Bruce Dolsen explains his connection to Galiano's trails: "When I first started painting on Galiano I was intrigued by the animal trails in the forest, and by human trails, some of which have been trodden for hundreds of years. And then by the roads: they twist around shorelines, disappearing around corners and over hill tops, bracketed by walls of green and gold, through which we glimpse the sea, the changing light."
