Beginnings
The Mural was initiated by Conny Nordin of the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa, and Kenna Fair, an artist on Galiano Island. They approached the creative artists at Mural Mosaic, and "Kunamokst, Coastal Inspirations" was born. Mural Mosaic combines artists as young as 16 years old to artists over 90 years old. The idea "took flight" during the summer and, fittingly, in the gardens of the Inn.The Artists
Almost 200 artists from various regions along the coast, from Mexico to British Columbia: internationally renowned artists, French Canadian artists, Galiano artists like Tish Saunders, Keith Holmes. Kenna Fair; First Nations artists like critically acclaimed Roy Henry Vickers and April White, and iconic Canadian artist Robert Bateman. Many of the 190 artists have been featured on the world stage as well. Special guest artists include California world renowned whale muralist Wyland and California muralist Judy Baca.
The Mystery
The Mystery? .... no one knew "the Big PIcture". Each artist was given a panel, and asked to follow its colours and general outline, but they could create any art they wished, as long as it depicted the wild West Coast. For months, suspense built, as individual panels were gradually revealed. But no one knew the final image of a beautiful mother orca and her calf.
Olympic Unveiling
Finally: the moment arrived for the Mystery to be Unveiled...and it was a highlight of a time that had many highlights. It was officially unveiling during the 2010 Winter Olympics, as part of the Cultural Olympiad at Spirit Square.
Artists from across British Columbia, as well as the creators from Mural Mosaic, were there as the excitement built to the unveiling.
Galiano Island
For Galiano Island, where the mural was conceived, having it "return home" for the first time was a spectacular experience. The Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable Steven L. Point, came to the Island for the ceremonies and led the bagpipe procession to a crowd of islanders, For the next few years, the mural will be enjoyed by visitors and residents alike, in its host location in the architecturally stunning Galiano Inn, created by owner, Mel Gibb.Kunamokst, Chinook jargon for "Together", represents the best of West Coast artists ... within the magic of Mural Mosaic.
